A simple and primitive rusty wire hook may be just the addition that your country ornaments and accents need.  Add one to the top of a birdhouse.  Hang seasonal ornaments on trees and branches.  Substitute one for a fabric tie in your next craft project.  Change the placement of elements in a wall arrangement without adding more nails or fasteners.  Use them to hang baskets and small framed prints.  Make dozens for your next craft show or bazaar.  Always test the strength of your wire hook to ensure that it will support the weight of the object that you are hanging.  We carry two varieties of rusty wire in our catalog---a single 22 gauge and a double twisted type with 20 and 22 gauge wires.
You will need---
  • Rusty wire-single or twisted
  • Wire cutters
  • Round nose or needle nose pliers
  • Metal file
  1. Cut the end of the rusty wire flush by facing the straight edge of your wire cutters toward the roll.  You do not want to begin with a chiseled edge.  File burrs down if necessary.
  2. Grasp the end of the wire with your pliers and make a loose coil.  The coil should make at least 1 1/2 turns.
  3. Lay your pliers aside and grasp the wire between your index finger and thumb at the ending point of the coil.  With the fingers of your other hand, hold the wire again a few inches closer to the roll.
  4. Bend the wire around the finger of your hand next to the coil and in the opposite direction of the coil.  If your wire is stiff enough to make your fingers uncomfortable, use a dowel rod, large knitting needle or table leg to form it.  The point is to reverse directions.
  5. Form your second coil from the outside into the center and in the opposite direction of the first one.
  6. Cut the wire off in the center of the coil with the cutters positioned to make a flush cut as before.  File down any burrs.  Fine tune the shape of your hook as needed.
  7. Your rusty wire hook is ready to use.
